The fracking issue is of even greater concern, in case some “bright spark” of a scientist suggests in future that nuclear waste can be stored in pulzerized or liquid form in old fracking formations. Successfully completed fracking would test whether or not a given ground foundation were watertight/airtight (from pressure temporal decay measurements); in an event that an underground formation were sealed, it would then be deemed “suitable” for storing nuclear waste. However, such a notion has to take into account earthquakes and ground structure changes with time (plate tectonics). To me personally, it seems like a bad idea, … but who knows what will be suggested by government agencies in future.
