{"id":705,"date":"2016-11-05T08:25:19","date_gmt":"2016-11-05T08:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=705"},"modified":"2016-11-05T08:25:19","modified_gmt":"2016-11-05T08:25:19","slug":"countering-capenhurst-issue-9-november-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=705","title":{"rendered":"Countering Capenhurst Issue  9 \u2013 November 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This issue of Countering Capenhurst is one in which we give some updates on what URENCO has been doing over the last couple of months.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>In September we asked URENCO just How Much Depleted Uranium Hexafluoride is stored around the Capenhurst site. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>We are still waiting for a reply. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>New Chair for URENCO<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stockhouse.com\/news\/press-releases\/2016\/08\/04\/urenco-to-appoint-peter-hill-cbe-non-exec-chairman\" target=\"_blank\">URENCO has just appointed Peter Hill<\/a> CBE as the companies Non-Exec Chairman.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Hill has previously worked for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corp-research.org\/Anglo-American\" target=\"_blank\">Anglo American PLC,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wikispooks.com\/wiki\/R%C3%B6ssing_Uranium_Mine\" target=\"_blank\">Rossing Uranium Limited<\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnotoil.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"> BP<\/a>.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>We are sure that his knowledge of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wise-uranium.org\/umoproe.html#IRANSTAKE\" target=\"_blank\"> Rossing <\/a>mine will serve the company very well in the years to come.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>URENCO to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/uatoday.tv\/business\/ukraine-to-get-european-enriched-uranium-instead-of-russian-agreement-signed-729792.html\" target=\"_blank\">URENCO has agreed to supply Ukrainian Energoatom with enriched Uranium<\/a>. At this stage we do not know which of the URENCO plants this work will be done.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This is while the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chernobyl_disaster\" target=\"_blank\">Chernobyl disaster <\/a>continues to destroy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chernobyl-children.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">the lives of many Ukrainians<\/a>. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Now read the quote by the British Ambassador to Ukraine Judith Gough that: <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&#8220;The UK welcomes steps by Ukrainian authorities to strengthen the country&#8217;s energy security and diversify its energy supplies. The British government will continue to work with URENCO and Energoatom in the area of nuclear energy to achieve that aim&#8221; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>It is one of the most outrageous remarks we have read in a long while.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Insurance Matters<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>The Nuclear Free Local Authority has just produced the following briefing.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuclearpolicy.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/A261-_NB148_Nuclear_liabilites_and_transport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Nuclear Third Part Liability: Defining Prescribed Sites and Transport Consultation <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This report looks at:- <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>The updated Government policy, which will require changes to legislation, increases the minimum level of financial liability that must be imposed on a nuclear operator in the event of a nuclear incident from \u00a3140m to \u20ac1200m.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>It concludes that:-<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&#8216;If the nuclear industry was forced to provide insurance to cover the full level of risk this could add more than \u20ac140\/MWh to the cost of nuclear electricity, making it almost completely uneconomic. Limiting nuclear liability clearly represents an unfair subsidy to nuclear power.&#8217; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Fire or Fired ?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>On Wendsday October 5<sup>th<\/sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.morningstaronline.co.uk\/a-dd0d-Nuke-plant-firefighters-could-strike#.V_XmGrVVK1G\" target=\"_blank\"> the Morning Star came up with this news story<\/a>:- <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&#8216;Twenty-five emergency response and rescue staff at Urenco\u2019s uranium enrichment plant in Capenhurst, Cheshire, have been threatened with dismissal.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This is very scary as any fire which might occur at the plant would have be covered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chesterchronicle.co.uk\/news\/chester-cheshire-news\/union-fears-over-firefighting-cuts-12009068\" target=\"_blank\">the local fire brigade<\/a> which has itself become <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chesterchronicle.co.uk\/news\/chester-cheshire-news\/cheshire-fire-service-sheds-more-11150016\" target=\"_blank\">subject to cuts<\/a>.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Though the really scary aspect about any fire at Capenhurst is what happens if occurs in any area is which Uranium Hexafluoride is stored or used.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>To repeat what we keep saying &#8211; Uranium Hexafluoride is highly toxic, radioactive, corrosive to most metals, and reacts violently with water.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>So any fire fighting at the plant does require some very specialist training and equipment.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>It&#8217;s not like one can just hose down any fire at the site and hope for the best.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>It is also of note that Babcock International currently supply fire and incident response teams to the Capenhurst site. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>No Sale this year, next year, or maybe at all.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>The proposed sale of URENCO has been delayed again.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This is how it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-nuclearpower-urenco-idUSKBN12W3YU\" target=\"_blank\">reported by Reuters<\/a> at the end of October: &#8211; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>\u00a0&#8216; Talks to restructure Urenco broke down after German utilities E.ON and RWE, which hold a third in the uranium enrichment firm, refused to agree to a deal that would have prevented a lucrative stock market listing in the future.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>It went on to state that: &#8211;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b> Urenco, the world&#8217;s second largest nuclear fuel vendor after Russia&#8217;s Tenex, could fetch up to 10 billion euros ($11.03 billion), sources have told Reuters.
