{"id":791,"date":"2017-10-12T09:27:36","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T09:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=791"},"modified":"2017-10-12T09:27:36","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T09:27:36","slug":"countering-capenhurst-our-hex-and-export-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=791","title":{"rendered":"Countering Capenhurst &#8211; Our Hex and Export Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This is a special issue of Countering Capenhurst. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Finding out just what goes on at Capenhurst is very difficult to do, <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>and the same applies to all of the URENCO plants.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>What follows is just a summary of what we have managed to find out about the plant of late, <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>and something about which countries URENCO has been trading with.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>A question of Hex<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>We continue to keep asking about just what is going on at Capenhurst, with questions such as:-<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onr.org.uk\/foi\/2016\/201604254.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>How much depleted Uranium Hexafluoride is stored at Capenhurst?<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&amp;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mariannewildart.wordpress.com\/2017\/10\/01\/putting-a-hex-on-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>What is the state of the Uranium Hex containers ?<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Yet there is an aspect of this which very few people have ever heard about. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>There is a clue to it within the following\u00a0 <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Review by HM Nuclear Installations Inspectorate.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onr.org.uk\/uclqqr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Urenco (Capenhurst) Ltd\u2019s strategy for decommissioning its nuclear licensed site.<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>\u00a0&#8216;UCL has an ongoing contract, up for renewal in 2007, with Technabexport of Russia, which takes ex UCL tails cylinders and re-enriches the material to low enrichment product and\/or pseudo natural. The product is sold on and the pseudo natural is re-fed or sold on. The operation of this contract is maintaining a steady state of net tails stocks on Capenhurst site.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>That&#8217;s something which URENCO has kept very quiet about.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>Shipping information<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>We recently came upon a German\u00a0 <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>BREMISCHE B\u00dcRGERSCHAFT <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>report which listed the movement of uranium through the port of Bremin.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This included uranium being sent from Urenco to Russia.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Two of the latest of these reports are <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bremische-buergerschaft.de\/dokumente\/wp19\/land\/drucksache\/D19L0862.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Atomtransporte durch das Land Bremen seit dem 30. Juni 2014 <\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&amp;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antiatombremen.blogsport.de\/images\/20140812_Drs181523_21908.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Atomtransporte durch das Land Bremen seit dem 30. Juni 2013<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>The importance of these reports is that they give some clues as to just which companies and countries URENCO is traiding with.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>Europe\u2019s radioactive secret<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Then we came upon the following report which was published in 2005,\u00a0 <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>and which has not been followed up on. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/PageFiles\/24536\/european-rad-secret.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Europe\u2019s radioactive secret.<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>How EDF and European nuclear utilities are dumping <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>nuclear waste in the Russian Federation<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&#8216; This report summarises the secretive attempts of the European nuclear industry to \u2018solve\u2019 one of their largest waste problems, by exporting and dumping tens of thousands of tonnes of uranium wastes in Siberia, in the Russian Federation.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>This last document is very worrying indeed.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sortirdunucleaire.org\/IMG\/pdf\/ecodefense-diehlp-2004-re-enrichment_of_west_european_depleted_uranium_tails_in_russia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b><i>The Re-enrichment of West European Depleted Uranium Tails <\/i><i>in Russia<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>The information contained in this document are very technical in nature.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>So rather than give an analysis of what is in this document we will just give the following summary from this report.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&#8216; Since 1996, depleted uranium tails from West European enrichers Urenco and Eurodif are being sent to Russia for re-enrichment. In Russia, the imported tails are, instead of natural uranium, fed into surplus enrichment cascades. The product obtained from re-enrichment is mostly natural-equivalent uranium plus some reactor-grade low-enriched uranium. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>These products are sent back to Urenco and Eurodif, while the secondary tails generated remain in Russia,where they are re-enriched further to obtain morenatural-equivalent uranium and\/or slightly enriched uranium. The latter is then used as blendstock for the downblending of surplus highly-enriched weapons-grade uranium into reactor-grade low-enriched <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>uranium. The ultimate tails left, still comprising at least two thirds of the amount imported, remain in Russia with unknown fate.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&amp;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>&#8216;Details on the re-enrichment business, though it is currently taking place at large scale, are hardly obtainable. In Russia, all related information is confidential; and, the West-European enrichment companies involved, Urenco and Eurodif, are not very communicative, to put it politely. In its recent annual reports, Urenco not even discloses its annual production figure, nor the capacity break down for its facilities, not to speak about other data of interest, such as amount and assays of tails produced.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>We will continue to keep searching for more information on these contacts.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a special issue of Countering Capenhurst.
