{"id":795,"date":"2017-11-06T08:48:49","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T08:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=795"},"modified":"2017-11-06T09:02:45","modified_gmt":"2017-11-06T09:02:45","slug":"countering-capenhurst-november-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=795","title":{"rendered":"Countering Capenhurst  &#8211; November 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b><em>As ever there is a lot of campaigning work which needs to be done.<\/em> <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Yet much of this work is very dependent upon putting a lot of time, and effort,\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b> in to constantly monitoring what goes on at the various radioactive fuel plants.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>It is not the most glamorous type of campaigning work, but it is an essential activity.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>This issue of Countering Capenhurst contains some of the various documents which we have been looking at of late.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>At some stage in the future we will combine a lot of this information.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>After which we might be better able to estimate just how much Depleted Uranium Hexafloride is still to be found at Capenhurst. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>That&#8217;s in contrast to all of the guestimations which we have been able to do so far. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>After that we will try to put together an estimation of just how long it will take URENCO to process it all in their new tailings plants. Though it will not be possible to do until we have more figures to work with. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b><em>Another URENCO Contract Comes To Light.<\/em> <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Finding out just which contracts URENCO has is not an easy thing to achieve.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>So we found the following news story of interest.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.omaha.com\/money\/oppd-board-of-directors-unanimously-approves-new-vice-presidential-position\/article_3e1de27a-5bec-566f-b90a-5c8aad3dad46.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>OPPD [ Omaha Public Power District ]board of directors unanimously approves new vice presidential position.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The key text in this news story being: &#8211;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216; Recently, Hansen\u2019s production fuels team unwound the last of four outstanding nuclear fuel agreements with URENCO, a global player in the nuclear industry that was asking OPPD for a sizable payday.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Hansen said earlier this week that URENCO argued OPPD owed \u201con the order of $66 million\u201d as outlined in a contract between the two parties.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>OPPD refuted the assertion, disassembled nuclear fuel that was not used or needed at Fort Calhoun and sold it back to URENCO, netting about $15 million in the process.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Not seeing the flasks because of the trees.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>This is a quote from the current issue of the Railway Magazine \u2013 November 2017.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>It is to be found under Operations Track Record &#8211; DRS.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216; The RM carries regular reports regarding the numerous flask trains which run around the country.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>One correspondent reported a visit made to Dungeness branch on September 19 when class 68 Nos 68003 + 68018 arrived with a train, with the class 68s having bodyside damage caused by trees, buckthorn, and brambles growing along the branch.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>We make no comment upon this report.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Recent Activities<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>On October 10<sup>th<\/sup> it was the 60<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Windscale fire.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/mariannewildart.wordpress.com\/2017\/10\/10\/remembering-the-windscale-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We joined with Radiation Free Lakeland to mark this event <\/a>at both the Spriingfields and Sellafield sites.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>While we continue to keep leafleting outside of Warrington station on a regular basis.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Warrington is just one of the many railway stations through which highly radioactive used fuel rods are taken to Sellafield.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>If you want to take part in any of these leafleting sessions, or hold one at your local station where these waste trains go through, then please get in contact with us.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><b>Further Research &amp; <\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>This is broken down in to tables such of the following: &#8211;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216; Table : Summary of the consignments (C) and packages (P) containing radioactive waste transported by road and rail to and from LLWRbetween April 2014 and March 2015.&#8217;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Yet there are still major information gaps in these figures.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Such as within the following:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216;Information on movements of radioactive material was also obtained from a metal recycling facility which treats radioactively contaminated metal. Surface contaminated metal is treated at this UK site but activated metal is sent to an overseas facility for treatment. In 2014, 131 consignments containing 950 packages were made from the metal recycling company. About 20% of the total consignments were to UK air and sea ports and were subsequently shipped overseas.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>There is no indication of which companies or ports these might be.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>While much of the information in this document uses the word Estimated.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>For example while referring to just how radioactive expossure the transport workers receive per year. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Thus it lists the following: &#8211;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; Estimated doses due to transport during the nuclear fuel cycle.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; Estimated doses due to transport during the uranium enrichment process. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; Estimated doses due to transport of radioactive material from the nuclear fuel reprocessing facility.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; Estimated doses due to transport of low level radioactive waste for recycling, storage and disposal.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>While this quote says it all: &#8211;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b><i>&#8216;During a visit to the fuel f<\/i><i>abrication facility at Springfields it was not possible to take dose rate measurements around a loaded vehicle as none were available.
