{"id":806,"date":"2017-12-27T08:46:18","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T08:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=806"},"modified":"2017-12-27T09:14:38","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T09:14:38","slug":"countering-capenhurst-december-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=806","title":{"rendered":"Countering Capenhurst \u2013 December 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">No useful information from the ONR.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">During 2016 we asked the Office for Nuclear Regulation [ONR] just how much depleted Uranium Hex is held at Capenhurst, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onr.org.uk\/foi\/2016\/201604254.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received this reply.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">We know that depleted uranium hex is being sent to Russia for further enrichment, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">and so we asked the ONR just how much this might be.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">We also asked for any details which they might have about this URENCO contract.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">The reply we received gave us no information as to just what this might be.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Amongst other things we were told that the ONR <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">does not possess any details on any commercial contracts made by the company. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Thus it raises more questions than answers.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>&#8211; Such as just how much depleted uranium hex will be left at Capenhurst to go through the new tailing&#8217;s plant ?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>&#8211; How this related to the various non-proliferation treaties ?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>&amp;<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>&#8211; Just how do we hold Urenco accountable for their &#8216;commercial operations&#8217; ?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Yet another MOD link.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">The link between Nukiller Power and Nukiller Weapons is and has always been a strong one.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">One of the latest links between the two comes in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Lister_(Royal_Navy_officer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vice Admiral <\/a><\/span><\/span>Sir Simon Lister, who has <a href=\"http:\/\/news.onr.org.uk\/2017\/11\/neds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just been appointed to the board of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong>He has previously worked for the MOD, and is :- &#8216; Predominantly experienced in the Defence nuclear sector&#8217;.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Neither an estimation or guestimation.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Working out just how much depleted Uranium Hex is left at Capenhurst will give us a clue about just how much the new tailing plant will be able to process each year. We have even worked out a formulae in order to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Yet just how can we get this end result, without the figures to go with it?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Flags wanted.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">We already have a number of anti-nukiller Smiling Sun &amp; Remember Fukushima flags to use at various events.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">We we now need are some Australian Aboriginal flags to go with them.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">This is to illustrate the link between\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wise-uranium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uranium mining,\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"> and various <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wise-uranium.org\/uip.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indigenous people. <\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">For example: &#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-a-f\/australia.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia&#8217;s uranium has been mined since 1954,<\/a> and three mines are currently operating. More are planned.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Australia&#8217;s known uranium resources are the world&#8217;s largest \u2013 almost one-third of the world total.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">It should be remembered that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foe.org.au\/indigenous_land_and_rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends of the Earth Australia has been<\/a>: &#8211; <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">&#8216; Working with the Mirrar people and other environmental organisations we helped stop the development of the Jabiluka uranium mine in Kakadu in the Northern Territory.&#8217; <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">&amp;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">&#8216;Working with the Kupa Pita Kunga Tjuta, we stopped the development of a radioactive waste dump on indigenous lands in northern South Australia&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Resources.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Magazines from the international movement against nuclear power.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">Laka Foundation, the documentation and research centre on nuclear power, has an extensive library with many thousands of books and reports (check the catalogue), posters (check), buttons, and a lot more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laka.org\/docu\/magazines\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laka also has a large collection of magazines from movement against nuclear power from all over the world<\/a>. From obscure pamphlets to full-colour magazines. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><br \/>\n&#8216;The past few years we digitized all important magazines from the Dutch movement (1975-1995) (check), and now we are starting to work on magazines from other countries .<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">40 Years On.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/close-capenhurst.org.uk\/?p=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">URENCO Declaration<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was published on <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">June <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">24<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">1978.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We will be going back to Capenhurst to read out this decoration again, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">together with an updated version, which will reflect the current work being done by the company.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">61 Years on.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">We will also be back at the Springfields plant on October 10<sup>th<\/sup> to mark 61 years since the Windscale Fire.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 align=\"left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\">More details on these events will be published during 2018<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No useful information from the ONR.
